Blue Monday? No thanks!

Jan 9, 2018

We're fighting back against the official "Glummest Day of the Year" with a fab money-off holiday offer

January 9 2018

Becky says: It was quite by accident, but it turns out that our Early Bird discount ends on January 15, which just happens to be Blue Monday.

That’s, according to experts, officially the most depressing day of the year.

They have even got a formula to calculate when it falls, based on doing some Maths with things like the weather, the time since Christmas, low motivational levels and how many New Year resolutions you’ve broken.

When you put it like that, it can seem a bit of a downer.

Anyway, I am hoping that a good chunk of money off your holidays this year will help ease the pain. We are offering 10% off ALL stays at Cuckoo Down Farm if you book before January 15. I reckon a lovely stay in the Devon countryside is something to look forward to and will cheer you up – we open at Easter which is not long now, and if you’re booking a summer holiday, the discount works out for a yurt week in August at £715.50 instead of £795 and a safari tent week is £976.50 instead of £1,085. Reason to be cheerful? I think so!

We don’t often offer discounts here at Cuckoo Down Farm but the motivation behind this one is that we are just in the process of putting a good amount of money into the farm this year, so cash flow is important and we’d like to get some bookings in early this year. (Side note, I have noticed over the years that people book their stays later and later – we’re a last-minute society these days!)

And what’s on the shopping list, I hear you ask?

Well, first up, we want another safari tent and it is looking like we will be buying another Clear Skies tent from our friends in Kent ( who made Primrose, the lovely safari tent that we first put up in the summer of 2015. It’s proved very popular and has lasted really well, it still looks as good as new. Our safari tents are so gorgeous, they have a huge amount of indoor space plus a massive covered verandah. Each has two bedrooms and the one I have my eye on also has a cute wooden cabin bed, so in total they sleep up to six people. There’s an indoor kitchen too and at the back of the tent John (my husband) has perfected the art of creating a shower room with 24/7 hot water, plus your own private loo.

As well as the new safari tent, I’m very keen for us to offer wood-fired hot tubs this year. We tried one of these a while back when we were on a fact-finding mission for the glamping site (tough job but someone has to do it!) and they are wonderful. You fill up what looks like a huge barrel with water, then light up a little stove which heats the water. We tried one in late October in Essex and I must admit, I was dubious as to whether it would be hot enough, but it was glorious. Our whole family had so much fun, especially as the place we were staying was also hosting a wedding nearby. Bobbing around in the hot tub with John and the kids while a spectacular firework show went on overhead was truly memorable.

Finally, I’m also keen for us to acquire a wood-fired pizza oven. Food has become increasingly important for our visitors at the farm and I think the chance to have really tasty home-made pizza will be really lovely for everyone. We’re planning on some sort of communal eating area too, which will be a lot of fun.

Anyway, all these plans are keeping my mind off Blue Monday, so here’s to a cheery 2018 for you all!

All the best,
